Austin is not Silicon Valley. And that is exactly why it works for building a startup. When I chose where to base Blossend Inc, I considered San Francisco, New York, Miami, and Austin. Austin won because it offered the best combination of talent, cost, ecosystem, and quality of life for a bootstrapped healthcare founder.

The decision was practical, not romantic. As a solo founder on a $65K budget, I could not afford San Francisco's rent, let alone its startup culture of burning cash on status. Austin gave me runway, community, and access to a healthcare market large enough to prove our concept.
