Lesson 11: Supply Constraint Is Good

Why deliberately constraining provider supply on OpenMyPro improved quality, increased patient trust, and created a marketplace network effect that organic growth could not replicate.

Every marketplace startup obsesses about growing supply. More Uber drivers, more Airbnb listings, more DoorDash restaurants. The assumption is that more supply equals more choice equals more user satisfaction. After building OpenMyPro to 150K+ users, I have learned the opposite: in healthcare, constraining supply is a feature, not a bug.

In the first six months, I prioritized provider quantity. I wanted to fill every specialty in every city. I accepted providers with minimal vetting — if they had a valid license, they were in. The result was predictable in hindsight: match quality dropped, patient satisfaction declined, and booking completion rates fell by 15%. Users were overwhelmed by choices they could not evaluate, and some providers were delivering subpar experiences that damaged OpenMyPro's reputation.

I reversed course and implemented supply constraints. Today, OpenMyPro accepts approximately 40% of provider applications. The vetting process evaluates credentials, patient reviews from other platforms, responsiveness (providers must respond to booking requests within 2 hours), and practice philosophy alignment with our cash-pay-first model. This curation costs me growth in provider numbers but produces dramatically better outcomes in every metric that matters.

The constrained supply produces three marketplace effects. First, quality assurance. When patients know that every provider on OpenMyPro has been vetted, they trust the platform's recommendations. This trust is the foundation of the 94% first-match satisfaction rate. On platforms with uncurated supply, patients must do their own due diligence — reading reviews, checking credentials, calling offices — which recreates the exact friction the platform was supposed to eliminate.

Second, provider motivation. Providers who know they were selected from a competitive applicant pool take their OpenMyPro presence more seriously. They respond faster, maintain better availability, and invest in their profiles. The exclusivity creates a professional norm that benefits all participants. When I told providers that acceptance rate is 40%, several said it was the reason they took the platform seriously — being part of a curated network carries reputational value that being listed on an open directory does not.

Third, network effects that compound. In a healthcare marketplace, supply quality drives demand, and demand drives supply quality further. Patients who have good experiences return and refer others, which increases booking volume. Increased booking volume makes OpenMyPro more attractive to high-quality providers, which further improves the supply. This virtuous cycle is impossible to create with uncurated supply because bad providers drive away good patients, which drives away good providers — a death spiral that plagues open healthcare directories.

The revenue impact is direct. Curated supply produces higher booking completion rates (patients trust the options), lower churn (providers who are vetted provide better experiences that keep patients returning), and higher willingness to pay (both patients and providers value quality over quantity). Our provider churn is under 3%, which is extraordinary for a marketplace — and it exists because providers on OpenMyPro are genuinely getting quality patient matches, not spam leads.

The lesson for marketplace founders: resist the temptation to maximize supply early. A marketplace with 100 excellent providers outperforms one with 1,000 mediocre providers on every metric that determines long-term success — satisfaction, retention, conversion, and revenue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does OpenMyPro reject 60% of provider applications?

Supply constraint creates quality: vetted providers drive 94% match satisfaction, under 3% provider churn, and a virtuous network effect where quality supply attracts quality demand. Uncurated supply caused a 15% drop in booking completions during OpenMyPro's early uncurated phase.

How does supply curation create marketplace network effects?

Virtuous cycle: curated providers → better patient experiences → more patient referrals → higher booking volume → more attractive to quality providers → even better supply. Open directories create the opposite: bad providers → patient churn → good provider exodus.

Is a curated marketplace more profitable than an open one?

Yes. Higher booking completion (patients trust options), lower churn (better experiences), and higher willingness to pay (quality perception). OpenMyPro's under 3% provider churn proves that curation drives retention more effectively than volume.
